Investigation on a potential biomarker of neurotoxicity of lead

Environmental Risk Analysis Laboratory, Division of Environmental Systems Engineering, Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering
Place of stay: University of Malta Gozo Campus, Malta
Term: February 15 – February 18, 2010
Lead (Pb) is a neurotoxic heavy metal known to cause learning deficit in young children. The aim of my research is the identification of biomarkers of the developmental neurotoxicity of Pb, which may be useful for risk assessment. At the Science and Technology Session of the 2010 International Journal of Arts and Sciences (IJAS) Mediterranean Conference for Academic Disciplines, I presented the results of my research suggesting that the protein heme oxygenase-2 might be among the molecular targets of Pb in developing neuronal cells. Aside from providing me with the opportunity to discuss my research with an international audience, the IJAS conference also enabled me to meet with researchers from other countries and learn about their studies.
