A Research on Reservoir Monitoring Using SAR Interferometry

Environment and Resources System Engineering, Division of Geo-Management, Department of Urban Management, Graduate School of Engineering
Place of stay: Pertamina, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia
Term: July 3 - July 24, 2010
A main objective of my internship was to introduce a new technique for reservoir monitoring by using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology. This method was successfully applied to the field data from oil sand area in Canada. I also had discussions with some key persons in Pertamina in order to explore the feasibility and acceptability of implementing this method in oil and gas fields in Indonesia, as well in geothermal fields as a collaborative research in future. Besides constructive criticisms and positive comments, they also provided positive suggestions and feedbacks on applying my study method in Indonesia, especially for geothermal field. During my internship, I presented my paper on the Bali 2010 International Geosciences Conference and Exposition. I also attended bilateral meeting between Japanese and Indonesian institutions in Bali regarding a plan to make a joint study agreement (JSA) of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) project at one of oil field in Indonesia, which will be conducted among ITB, PERTAMINA, and Kyoto University. A contribution of my study on this collaborative project is monitoring reservoir dynamics through estimating surface deformations acquired InSAR data.
