Environmental Risk Analysis Laboratory, Division of Environmental Systems Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering
Place of stay: Hanoi Environmental Protection Agency - Hanoi Natural Resources and Environment, Institute of Environment Technology - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology
Term: February 6 – March 18, 2011
My internship was conducted with the aims of data collection and preliminary survey of To Lich river in Hanoi. Visiting the government agencies, I was able to obtain useful information as well as relevant data regarding my study area. In addition, several site visits were made to examine general environmental conditions, which led me to make my final sampling plan. Water and sediment core samples were taken from different sampling positions over the river. Soil core sampling was also carried out in the vegetables farms, which are being irrigated by contaminated water from river. The samples were analyzed for identification of heavy metals along with organic matter. Similar samples were also brought back to Japan for further analysis. During the internship, drizzly rain happened so often that I had to delay the sampling trip for a couple of times. I really appreciate this internship, which allowed me to have more experiences and inspired me to keep moving forward with my research.
