Report 065

Outline

This seminar intended to build a better relationship between Kyoto University and Tsinghua University in cooperative researches. Six students from Tsinghua University, three engineers from Monitoring Center of Tsinghua University, and two engineers of Shenzhen Water Bureau were invited to the seminar held in Kyoto University. It was implemented mainly by the training for analytical methods of emerging contaminants such as Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products, carried out at Shimadzu Techno-Research (for ICP), Research Center for Environmental Quality Management (for LC/MS/MS), and Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (for GC/MS and GC/ECD) of Kyoto University.

Report

Research Center for Environmental Quality Management (RCEQM) of Kyoto University provided the participants with a three-day training for pharmaceuticals analysis with LC/MS/MS. The first day of the training (October 15) at RCEQM started by self- introduction of the participants, and RCEQM introduction and a tour, followed by principle introduction of pharmaceuticals analysis with LC/MS/MS. A training program of the first day consisted of pretreatment method of water samples. The participants actively discussed reagents and experimental setups required for pretreatment procedure because they previously had no experience with micro pollutant analysis. The second day of the training (October 16) consisted of the preparation of standard solution for standard curve and mobile phase for LC/MS/MS, and LC/MS/MS measurement. All the participants were induced to prepare the solution by themselves. Training for data acquisition took place on the third day (October 17) at RCEQM. In this training, the participants corrected peak area of each detected pharmaceutical, and an instructor, one of the RCEQM members, gave a description of how to calculate recovery rate and concentration of pharmaceuticals. The recovery rates obtained by the participants group and instructors group during the training did not show a great difference, probably because the participants carefully followed the given procedures and instructions.
Training for heavy metal analysis with ICP was carried out on October 19 at Shimadzu Techno- Research. The participants got the overview of micro pollutant analysis first. This training received favorable comments because the participants could have practical experience of preparing standard solutions for calibration curve and measuring them by themselves. They were trained for the analytical method of disinfection by-products using GC/MS and GC/ECD from October 21 to 23 at Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies of Kyoto University. The participants relatively smoothly went through pretreatment procedures in this training. However it took a little long time to finish the whole analysis of disinfection by-products because some of them were unfamiliar with instrument analysis. This training gave them a good opportunity to understand the principle of GC/MS and GC/ECD and how to use them.
These trainings provided the participants with good experience of Japanese high-tech research that they cannot get in class. We expect that this valuable experience will bring a better promotion of future Japan-China cooperative research.
