Outline
In 2009, we launched an international collaboration research on Sanitation Constraints Classification and Alternatives Evaluation for Asian Cities under the financial support of Ministry of Environment. As a part of this international collaboration activity, we invited three researchers: Prof. Nazmul Ahsan from Khulna University, Bangladesh, Dr. Hoang Hai from Danang University of Technology, Vietnam, and Sangam Shrestha from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. Also, we had guests from Universiti of Malaya based on other international collaboration research. Using this opportunity, we organized an international seminar on water and sanitation in Asian cities.
Report
In this seminar, we had 22 participants: one professor and two assistant professors and three students of Kyoto University, one professor of Saitama University, one professor of University of Marketing and Distribution Sciences, two researchers of National Institute of Environmental Studies, two researchers of Japan Education Center of Environmental Sanitation, three invited international guests from Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, and 7 researchers from Malaysia based on a relevant research project.
After the introduction of this seminar by Prof. Shigeo Fujii, three presentations were given on water and sanitation in three Asian cities: Khulna in Bangladesh, Danang in Vietnam and Kathmandu in Nepal. Prof. Md. Nazmul Ahsan, Khulna University, Bangladesh, firstly presented his research, titled “Sanitation in High Density Urban Settlements: Challenges & Way Forward”. Dr. Hoang Hai, Danang University of Technology, Vietnam, secondarily gave a presentation on “Water Source and Water Supplying in Danang City”. Finally, Dr. Sangam Shrestha, Assistant Professor of Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, provided his research results on “Water Supply and Sanitation Situation in Kathmandu Metro City, Nepal”. Key information to improve the situation of water and sanitation were given in their research presentations.
Through the seminar, crucial information related to water and sanitation in three Asian cities was shared amongst participants. The seminar was completed with great success.
