This program has been started last April. This symposium is the first opportunity to get together for researchers from both countries. The purpose of this symposium is to know each other and to discuss 4 groups’ research plan for next 4 years.

At the beginning of symposium, Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, Prof. Satoru KOMORI held welcome remark. He expressed his will to support this program based on the nearly 30-year history between the Graduate School of Engineering and many universities in Malaysia.
Subsequently, the Coordinator of Japanese side, Prof. Yoshihisa SHIMIZU looked back preceding program between the Graduate School of Engineering and Malaysia, introduced and explained the specific objectives of this program.
The Coordinator of Malaysian side, Prof. Nik Meriam Nik Sulaiman emphasized the importance of 4 groups’ research (hydrology, water quality, environmental risk, and governance) and their mutual relationship. She showed a movie that enlightens importance of water. Then, Leader of Group 4, Prof. Masahisa NAKAMURA of Shiga University made a keynote lecture on Integrated Lake Basin Management (ILBM).
In the afternoon, each group had discussion to consider their concrete research and educational plan of next 5 years. Finally, each group got together again and presented their discussion summary. This symposium, in which more than 120 persons (43 from Malaysia) participated, ended in wonderful atmosphere and with great success.
