Outline
EIT-JSCE Joint International Symposium on International Human Resource Development for Disaster-Resilient Countries 2012 is being held for the purpose of technical knowledge exchange between Japan and Thailand in the field of geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics. At this symposium, in addition to “General Session”, there will be “Young Engineers & Graduate Students Session” to provide an opportunity for Japanese and Thai students/young engineers in this field to make presentations in English.
Report
EIT-JSCE Joint International Symposium on International Human Resource Development for Disaster-Resilient Countries 2012 was held on September 13 and 14, 2012 at the Imperial Queen’s Park hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. “General Session” was held on September 13, and the “Young Engineers & Graduate Students Session” was held on September 14.
This symposium, first held in 2002, is aimed at technological knowledge exchange between Japan and Thailand in the field of geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics. This year the eleventh symposium was cosponsored by the Global COE Program “Global Center for Education and Research on Human Security Engineering for Asian Megacities”, Kyoto University “Re-Inventing Japanese University Project” Consortium for International Human Resource Development towards the Reconstruction of Disaster Resilient Countries (DRC), Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT), and Asian Institute of Technology.
This year is the sixth time that the “Young Engineers & Graduate Students Session” was being held. There were a total of 29 oral presentations at the session. The Excellent Presentation Prize was awarded one or two of each session, totally eight students and young engineers, including six Japanese, for their excellent presentations.
At the “General Session”, intended for introducing technological knowledge from Japan and Thailand in the field of geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics. Mr. Hirotake Nakamura (Nippon Expressway Research institute Co. Ltd.) gave a special lecture titled “Emergency Earthquake Disaster Response by NEXCO RI”. In the technical session lectures were delivered by seven speakers, respectively.
There were 60 participants in total: 40 from Japan and 20 from Thailand. Upon this successful tenth symposium, it is planned to continuously promote exchange among students and researchers, including at future symposiums hosted by Japan, in the field of geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics in Southeast Asia region and Japan
