Outline

The purpose of the 3rd International Conference on Sustainable Future for Human Security - SUSTAIN 2012 is to provide a forum for international researchers community to discuss, share and exchange their latest research progress in relation with sustainable future issues; to develop and promote a sustainable networking between participants to hold human securities and bridging ideas into policies and desired realities; to broaden information access for scientific communities toward global, scientific, technology and engineering societies; and to empower Asian in general and South East Asia in particular for research collaboration, network and partnership among researcher communities and decision makers.

The 3rd Sustain Conference was held at Clock Tower Centennial Hall, Kyoto University, on November 3-5, 2012. This conference was organized by the Indonesian Student Association in Kyoto and Kansai. The chairman of the organizing committee was Mr. Hatma Suryatmojo from Kyoto University. There were three main activities that be undertaken during this conference: (1) International Conference, (2) Workshop on Scientific Writing, and (3) Conference Tour Program to promote the culture of Japan.
The conference was opened by Prof. Junichi Mori, he welcomed all the participants and the invited speakers. In this light, he also explained the importance of this conference and gave appreciation to the Indonesian students who have been able to organize an international conference in japan with collaborate several strategic institution inside Kyoto University. The Opening Ceremony was concluded by a symbolic choir of Indonesia’s traditional music instrument made from bamboo, angklung, marked the beginning of the 2 day event. After the opening ceremony, there was keynote speech session from 3 presenters. Prof. Jun Honna has deliver speech with the topic related to the Sustainable Future for Human Security in the Context of Politics and International Relations. Prof. Yohanes Surya has presented the Sustainable Future for Human Security in the Context of Research and Education in Indonesia. Prof. Kaoru Takara has presented the Sustainable Future for Human Security in the Context of Sustainability and Survivability Studies to Cope with Extreme Events Causing Serious Disasters. In the second day, Prof. Josse De Baerdemaeker has presented the Sustainable Future for Human Security in the Context of Precision Agriculture Technology for Sustainable Good Agricultural Practices and Prof. Tsuyoshi Yoshimura has presented the Sustainable Future for Human Security in the Context of Sustainable Pest Management and Innovative Humano-Habitability. The last presenter in this keynote speech session was Mr. Muhammad Lutfi. He mentioned about the challenge and opportunities of Indonesia as the next world’s economy.
Around 165 people attended the conference from 19 countries, Asia and Europe, including Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hongkong, Thailand, Netherlands, Germany, South Korea and Iran. The participants' presentations were categorized into 6 (six) topics: (1) Energy and Environment, (2) Sustainable Forestry and Agriculture, (3) Sustainable Built Environment in Tropical Hemisphere Countries, (4) Environmental Friendly and Efficient Technology, (5) Hydrology and Disaster Prevention, and (6) Social and Economic Development.
In general, this conference has been successfully carried out. Around 121 papers were presented in this conference. It is hoped that this conference could address problems of primary importance for human security, discussing and proposing a more constructive and progressive approach to ensure future societal sustainability.
