Outline
The international seminar on humanitarian logistics and emergency management was held on 6th November 2012 at Katsura Campus, Kyoto University.
The purpose of the seminar is to bring together multidisciplinary researchers and practitioners to discuss and exchange ideas on:
• Past disaster experiences and lessons learnt
• Issues and challenges in humanitarian logistics
• Modeling techniques
• Emergency management, response and recovery
• Risk management strategies
The overall objective is to explore innovative yet practical research ideas that can strengthen humanitarian logistics system.

The objective of the seminar was successfully achieved through active participation of academics and practitioners from multidisciplinary fields. During the presentation, concept of humanitarian logistics was discussed. Logistics and transportation problems encountered in past disaster and catastrophic events mainly during “The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami” in Tohoku region, Queensland Flood 2011 and hazardous material incidents 2012 were highlighted. Proposals of analytical methodologies to tackle the problems were also presented.
Each of the six presentations was followed by lively questions from the enthusiastic audiences. On the whole, the seminar provided a platform for discussion among students, researchers and practitioners in the field of transportation and logistics to exchange their knowledge, ideas and experiences relating to logistics and transportation issues after disasters and catastrophic events.
