‘Japan – U.S. International Symposium on Implementation in Water System for Disaster Prevention & Preparedness in Sendai’ was held at the Sendai Trust City Conference, Sendai on November 12th, 2012. The objectives of this symposium are the followings:
1. To share our experiences of 1994 Northridge Earthquake and 2011 Tohoku Disaster.
2. To learn water system damages in the 2011 Tohoku Disaster.
3. To recognize the effectiveness of measures against earthquake.
4. To establish the international network in water system for disaster prevention and preparedness.
In the morning session, three invited presentations and discussions are conducted. In the afternoon, we have a site-visit to Oridate district, Arahama district, a temporary site for disaster debris operation, and Minami Gamou Waste Water Treatment Plant in City of Sendai.

At first, Assoc. Prof. Hirayama, an organizer of this symposium, would address the objectives of this symposium. And, Mr. Ando, a co-organizer of this symposium and Deputy Director General, Waterworks Bureau, City of Sendai, would state the opening remarks.
In the first session, Ms. Kawamura had a presentation on the experience of the 2011 Tohoku Disaster and an effectiveness of countermeasures against earthquakes in City of Sendai. Also, it was pointed out that more resilient water system would requires establishment of reconstruction plan after the 2011 Disaster, detail analysis of damage to water system, and establish the networking of water professionals. Dr. Davis presented their experience of 1994 Northridge earthquake. He pointed out that we, water professionals, need to learn from others and to share experiences, and implementation of good practice is required. Mr. Hara made an interim report of damages to water system in the 2011 Tohoku Disaster.
In the afternoon session, we visited to Oridate district, Arahama district, a temporary site for disaster debris operation, and Minami Gamou Waste Water Treatment Plant in City of Sendai. We recognized the damages to water system in hillside areas caused by land slides and the impact of tsunami to seashore areas.
