Development of Landslide Hazard Mapping for Penang Island, Malaysia
Earthquake and Lifeline Engineering Laboratory, Department of Urban Management, Graduate School of Engineering
Place of stay: Universiti Sains Malaysia, School of Civil Engineering
Term: September 20 - October 3, 2011
Penang Island is one of the highly populated states in Malaysia. Due to limited spaces for housing development, houses are built on hilly terrains and slopes. With the fact that Penang is highly susceptible to landslides and also there were recorded events of earthquakes shocks felt, it is important for me to fully utilize the opportunity of internship. The purpose of my internship was to gain sufficient knowledge on the soil types in Penang Island as well as able to understand the island surfaces through the eyes of local experts. During my internship, I had the opportunity to work with local researchers in Universiti Sains Malaysia. I have sufficiently collected data related to geotechnical characteristics, rainfall data for Penang Island as well as Geographical Information System (GIS) for Penang Island. Through this data I will be able to justify my findings in my research and will be able to use it for future benefit of Penang Island.
