Developing climate change adaptation strategies for water utilities in Japan

Urban Supply Systems Laboratory, Division of Lifeline Engineering, Department of Urban Management, Graduate School of Engineering
Place of stay: Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain and Kobe Waterworks Bureau, Japan
Term: March 14 - March 16, 2011 and Jan. 2012, Feb. 2012
Unlike the usual trend, my internship program was carried out in parts. The first leg of the internship activities took place in Valencia, Spain from March 14, 2011 through March 16, 2011. The purpose was dual – First, to make a platform presentation of my research work at an international conference (Pi-2011), and second, to interact with experts in my field of study so as to prepare the groundwork for further research. Presenting my work at the conference was a wonderful, educative experience. Not only did it provide me an avenue to improve my verbal presentation skills, it also, through the question and answer session, gave me an opportunity to learn the art of defending my work in a manner acceptable by the scientific community. Following the presentation, my interaction with certain well-known scientists in my study area yielded a wealth of intriguing and inspiring ideas, some of which have been incorporated in the next stage of my research. The second leg of the internship program was at the Kobe Waterworks Bureau, Japan intermittently in Jan and Feb 2012. The main reasons for this program was to have technical discussions with the utility managers, and collect certain raw data required for my research. The discussions with the managers focused on developing strategies for the utility to address the affects of uncertain water quality and quantity, likely to be caused by climate change, which is a significant theme of my study.
