Hydrometeor classification system using polarimetric radar measurements synchronized with the video-sonde observation

Hydrometeorological Disasters Engineering, Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering
Place of stay: Okinawa Electromagnetic Technology Center, NICT
Term: May 12 - May 25, June 7 - June 12, 2012
The campaign observation was accomplished during May and June in Okinawa, Japan. The main objective of my internship was to find out the relationship between the polarimetric radar parameters and real precipitation particle, and to develop a hydrometeor classification method. Polarimetric radar can estimate cloud microphysics, such as raindrop size distributions and classification of cloud hydrometeors, and improve the accuracy of quantitative rainfall estimation by using appropriate combination of polarimetric parameters. And, the videosonde is a useful tool for giving important information for remote sensing techniques such as polarimetric radar. During this internship, I learned hydrometeor classification system using polarimetric radar measurements synchronized with the video-sonde observation. In addition, Trilateral workshop on Hydrometeorology was held among Japan, Korea and Taiwan. I also made presentation about my goal and purpose of PhD course, and short results. It was a good experience for me to discuss with them and to exchange knowledge among us.
