3) to introduce a development of water/wastewater treatment technology in both China and Japan, and to discuss for the potential research and interest of research in the seminar.

Report

A pilot plant operated by Kyoto University and an advanced water treatment technology which is located in the Kunijima water treatment plant was visited on Aug. 2. Konan-chubu wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and Biwako museum was visited on Aug. 3. Anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O) process which is used to remove the nutrients from wastewater was introduced to the participants. Actually, Konan-chubu WWTP has this kind of treatment process because it is necessary to keep and improve water quality of Biwa Lake which is a closed water body. Keen discussion regarding to sludge treatment in which the participant of China is interested was carried out. Moreover, the history of Biwa Lake and its ecosystem was explained in the Biwa museum. The participants deeply understood such kind of information, compared with Taihu Lake which is seriously contaminated.
The seminar held on Aug. 4 at Katsura campus of Kyoto University. Water/wastewater treatment technologies using membrane were presented from the Profs. of Tsinghua University, and present situation and subjects in the future of water/wastewater treatment were explained from the Profs. of Kyoto University, respectively. Finally, Prof. Yoneda introduced the GCOE program and their activities. This seminar and technical tours gave us an opportunity to exchange among Kyoto University, Tsinghua University, Jiangnan University and related companies. Thus, we were able to make a nice relationship each other.
