Outline
11th Taiwan-Japan Joint Student Seminar on Earthquake Engineering was held at Abukuma-so, Miyagi Prefecture, on July 18th-20th, 2011. The purpose of this seminar is to present research topics in English by students. This seminar is held twice a year, and last seminar was held at National Central University, Taiwan.
Report
In the opening ceremony, Prof. Chen, National Central University, Taiwan, and Prof. Takahashi, Kyoto University expressed the siginificance and the expectations of this international seminar for students. In this semnar, there were 20 English oral presentations by students of 5 universities. For each presentation, not only professors but also students joined in the discussion. If no discussion from the students, chairpersons induced their questions activery.
More than 30 participants attended the seminar, bringing together not only professors, but also students, reflecting an interest in Earthquake Engineering.
At last of the seminar, participants visited damage area by 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, including Minami-Gamou sewage disposal plant, Tohoku Shinkansen viaducts, and Furukawa area of Osaki City.
A banquet was held at the end of the 1st day offering the Kyoto University professors a chance to strengthen the ties with the students. The exchange of opinions was fruitful amongst the participants, sharing their perceptions and future visions of this seminar.
