Outline
The GCOE Seminar on Water and Environment in Asian Mega Cities was held at Conference Room, 2F, Red Brick Building of Civil Engineering, Kyoto University on November 15 (Tue), 2011. The objective of this seminar is to focus on one of the emerging environmental problems in recent years, which is micropollutant. We invited two experts, who have been researching on the micropollutant topic, as our guest speakers. And we also invited five researchers and students from Kyoto University to present in this seminar.

Together with 6 faculty members and staffs plus 13 students, participants were as follows: one professor, two associate professor, two postdoctoral researchers, five doctoral students, seven master students and one undergraduate student. The seminar started with the seminar introduction from Prof. Shigeo Fujii. Dr. Norimitsu Saito from Department of Environmental Science, Research Institute for Environmental Sciences and Public Health of Iwate Prefecture and Assoc. Prof. Shin Takahashi from Division of Environmental Chemistry, Center of Marine Environmental Studies, Ehime University were the two invited guest speakers presented in the first session. Dr. Saito presented about the method development on analyzing perfluorinated compounds in water samples. The second invited guest, Assoc. Prof. Takahashi presented on the topic of persistent organic pollutants and its related compounds in Asia-Pacific region: legacy and emerging issues. The second session included five presentations from researchers and students in Kyoto University. The session started from a presentation by Dr. Vimal Kumar on endocrine disrupting chemicals followed by Mr. Masanori Narumiya presenting about the pharmaceuticals compounds in wastewater treatment plant. Then, there were three presenters (Dr. Chinagarn Kunacheva, Mr. Dinh Quang Hung and Mr. Yuji Suzuki) presenting on their research related with the perfluorniated compounds. The valuable discussion on their researches and activities had been done throughout the seminar. The seminar was ended with closing remarks from Assoc. Prof. Shuhei Tanaka. This seminar was closed with great success.
