GHG Reduction Effects Achieved by Utilization of Regional Waste Biomass Including Waste Food

Environment Preservation Engineering, Division of Environmental Material Science and Technology, Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering
Place of stay: Sardinia 2011 (Italy), Vienna University of Technology (Austria), ISWA 2011 (Korea)
Term: October 1–13, 2011 and October 16–20, 2011
I have studied the effect of greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction achieved by utilizing regional waste biomass in Kyoto. The purpose of my internship was to collect information about municipal solid waste management systems established in foreign countries in terms of life cycle approach. After attending two international conferences (Sardinia 2011 and ISWA 2011), I acknowledged the significance of the measures in European and Asian countries for reducing GHG emissions derived from direct landfill of organic waste. Among the 3Rs approach, "reduce" (waste prevention) has the highest priority. I discussed with other researchers who attended the IWWG workshop conducted during Sardinia 2011 and shared the knowledge about sorting methods of waste food for the implementation of household waste food prevention measures. Further, I learned of certain success stories of regional waste biomass utilization in Vienna through a discussion with Prof. Brunner of the Vienna University of Technology and a technical tour of the biomass CHP plant in Simmering, Austria. I intend to try to improve my study by acquiring related knowledge from young researchers in foreign countries who I became acquainted with through this internship.
